Sun Damage & Sun Spots: Causes & Treatments

What Is Sun Damage & Sunspots?

Sun damage can cause lesions and rough, dry, bumpy skin – otherwise known as actinic keratosis. Sunspots are flat, discrete, brown blemishes on the skin from too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. They can be typically found on areas of the body that get the most exposure such as the chest, face, back and the tops of hands and feet.

What Cause Sunspots & Sun Damage?

The main cause of sunspots and sun damage is, of course, overexposure to the sun. When the body gets too much ultraviolet radiation from light, the cells disfigure and discolor; creating a splotchy appearance that can sometimes turn malignant if left untreated.

Effective Treatments & Prevention

To protect yourself from sun damage and sunspots, use common sense and protection – wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen – on warm, sunny days. If you have already contracted sun damage or sun spots, there are a number of treatments that can help alleviate your discolored condition. These include office-based laser treatments, chemical peels, such as Fraxel, prescription and non-prescription topicals, and more.
